Assalamu Aleikum wa Rahmatullah
Mash'Allaah, I thought it might be beneficial to look at this discussion in light of some of the Muslim women that are prominent in the media today. Here in Yemen, for example, there is a sister named Tawakkul who is one of the leaders of the youth movement. I believe, and Allaah is the only One Who knows what is in the hearts of the people, that she probably intends good by what she is doing- but as one of the Salaf said, "How many people desire good but do not know how to reach it?"
And we know that there are two conditions for an action to be accepted: Having the correct intention and adherence to the guidelines of the Shari'ah.
Insh'Allaah look around for examples of Muslim women who are trying to benefit society, and think about their methodology and whether they will reach their goals. Why not make a list of how you, individually, can benefit society, learning from their mistakes and misdeeds? Then look at women who you believe to be working towards the same goal, only doing so in accordance with the Qur'aan and Sunnah- and look at your list again, revising to add that which you can learn from them?
Insh'Allaah, share what you have learned with us!

Alhamdulillah, this is so true, and what a wonderful reminder, jazakAllaahukhairun. We see a lot of people calling for rectification, especially here with this "Arab Spring" fitnah going on- but they aren't basing it on the correct things, so what sort of "success" can the expect??

Sheikh Muqbil, may Allaah have mercy upon him, was asked concerning biographies in Arabic, to be read by the common person- he said there were none, mash'Allaah- that one would have to have some knowledge of 'ilm ar-rijal, hadeeth, and other sciences...so if this was so in Arabic, how much more so in English, mash'Allaah. Insh'Allaah you will be able to read his full comment in translation in Abu Sukhailah's upcoming book on seeking knowledge.
So, if the books do have a full tahqeeq- wherein the sources are not only listed (takhreej) but are authenticated, and explanations from the righteous scholars, then insh'Allaah that would take away much of the worry, alhamdulillah. I am simply urging caution, mash'Allaah, when dealing with books that one is not familiar with.
The biography of the Prophet, may Allaah's praise and salutations be upon him, which is the best in English (and Allaah knows best) is "A Biography of the PRophet of Islam in Light of the Original Sources: An Analytical Study by Dr. Mahdi Rizqullah Ahmad, translated by Syed Iqbal Zaheer, published by Darussalam. The footnotes are very extensive, alhamdulillah, as to the ahadeeth used and their status.
And, as always, Allaah knows best.

I am not up to date on the English books that are available, but I think that you will both find that if you look at the collections of ahaadeeth such as Saheeh al Bukhaari and Saheeh Muslim in sections such as the Fadaa'il of the companions, you will find many beneficial authentic reports.
Alhamdulillah, one of our projects here at Taalib is to translate and provide authentic biographies here, insh'Allaah- of the righteous people past and present.
Concerning fundraising, the issue as you stated it is too broad. One would have to ask a scholar or person of knowledge concerning their specific case, insh'Allaah.
